It’s the most, wonderful time of the year – Stout Season! And today is International Stout Day! Why? Why not? Pretty sure there is a day for everything you can think of now. (World Giraffe Day is June 21st if you were looking for an occasion to buy The Thirsty Giraffe team a gift.) So, in honor of today, here are my personal Top 5 Stouts. There are so many different flavor combinations possible with stouts, it is almost impossible to narrow it down to just five but since I just thought of writing this blog post this morning, I made it work!
THE THIRSTY GIRAFFE’S TOP FIVE STOUTS
Well, of course I have to start with my favorite brewery. (Read my love letter here.) Greenbush has many different delicious stouts to choose from and frankly, I love them all but Delusion has always stood out to me. An Imperial Cream Stout aged in whiskey barrels, it pours black with lots of chocolate, vanilla and booze! Putting whiskey or bourbon in a stout is always a good idea in my opinion.
My favorite fruits are cherries and my favorite beer style is stout. So of course this is on my list! A strong cherry flavor that is not overpowering or artificial tasting, backed up by lots of chocolate notes but not too sweet. It’s like drinking a liquid chocolate covered cherry!
A unique blend of rye, wheat malt and pecans, this limited edition seasonal beer is one that gets me excited every time I spot the label. With a smooth and creamy mouth feel and flavors of bourbon, chocolate, coffee and vanilla, this is a beer that keeps your palate working to pick up new taste with each sip. I have several bottles aging in the cellar and can’t wait to crack one next year. (You can read about my opinion on the hunt for this guy here.)
Railtown Brewing Co. Good Mooed Milk Stout
The lactose in this stout helps bring the sensation of drinking a glass of (alcoholic) chocolate milk. Sweet and creamy with noticeable full mouth feel, this new kid on the block has quickly become a favorite, as have most of Railtown’s offerings. Curious? Read a great review of this new brewery on Mittenbrew!
My favorite stout of all. A perfect balance of chocolate, coffee, a little vanilla, lots of malt, never bitter but with a touch of hops. Pours thick, drinks smooth. This beer is great fresh and gets even better with aging year after year. Because of its elusiveness, opening a bottle of this doesn’t happen often. I forget how much I love this beer until I take that first sip and get transported to beer heaven.
So there you have it! What are you drinking to celebrate International Stout Day? Let us know in the comments!
